If you are on a salary, or with a company, you stand to earn 18,000 GBP+, anywhere up to around 75,000 GBP for an experienced, quality web designer.

A freelance or owner of a company can earn a lot more, the average website costing between 400 GBP to in excess of 10,000 GBP, depending on the quality and level of skill involved, so an experienced freelance with template code, fast working skill and a wide knowledge.

A freelance could also sell his templates over and over again to individuals who want to make their own, as well as advertising profits from websites he has made.

As a small business owner myself, i make around 600 GBP average per site, each site taking me 2 working days (16 hours) to create, adjust and go live. Aftercare sometimes can take an extra 2-8 hours for adjustments, but as long as a content management system is built in- the client no longer requires your time, leaving you free to carry on working on other sites.

So, if i were to have clients every day of the week, i would earn between 4,000 and 8,000 a month, maybe more if i had a large contract worth more money. Of course this is not the case, as it is a competitive world, and i don't have clients every day, but if it wasn't?

I would make between 50,000 GBP and 100,000 GBP working 5 days a week. Hard work though, very hard work.

  • It depends on what they design, how good of a designer they are, and how lucky they are. If they are really good, and get lucky enough to land a major corporate website deal, they could make quite a bit.
  • In the UK a typical starting salary is probably between $14,000 and $18,000 ($26,000 to $33,000 at the present exchange rate) but salaries can well be in the region of $35,000 plus ($65,000) for an experienced and successful web designer and those going freelance can earn a lot more if the conditions are right.

It depends on your definition of 'web designer.'

  • Web programmer: Uses full programming languages like C#, Java, ZEND (PHP) or VB to program an application that is delivered in a browser. Usually uses an IDE (integrated development environment) to create the web application.
  • Web developer: Uses scripting languages like PHP, ASP or JSP to develop pages that usually have some sort of dynamic content. This may include database connections through MySQL or SQL PostGreSQL. Usually familiar with JavaScript at a programmatic level for DHTML.
  • Web designer: May use scripting languages, but is more often focused on the layout of the pages than the functionality. Usually has some graphic background and is able to use programs like gimp or Photoshop. Knows HTML, CSS and some java script.
  • A web designer will make around $22 to $30k. A web developer entry level is $$28 to 33k, experienced up to $50k. A web programmer is $50 to $75k. Now these are all estimates and it is possible to be a higher level of each. You can be a really solid web designer (more expectations = CSS, XHTML, JavaScript and other client side technologies) and make more money.
  • According to national salary data, the average salary of a web designer is $33,859 to $50,213.
