Communication over wires is a relatively recent innovation and started with the telephone/telegraph - even radio communication involves use of wires in the radio sets and ariels.

Before using the telegraph people used to write letters to each other and post them. People also spoke to each other face to face or "yodeled" across valleys in the Alps. When wanting to communicate over longer distances the American Indian people used smoke signals, the English used fire beacons and semaphore flags. People also used mirrors and shuttered lamps to communicate over distances. All this is wireless communication.
