It seems that Alltel was bought by Verizon, and there is talk of people having to buy new phones if they want to continue using the AlltelVerizon service when the two companies finally do merge. Verizon itself has a pretty good range of coverage, as it has more towers overall than Sprint. I would personally go with Verizon because Alltel is to be merged with it, possibly sometime soon.
If you purchased an Alltel cell phone plan a few years ago, you need to remember that these plans are now Verizon cell phone plans. Verizon purchased Alltel and all customers were transferred over to the new company. You will need to go on the Verizon website to order new phones, to change your plan, or to check your bill. You will also be able to get service at any of the Verizon stores.

Alltel phones offer consumers important alternatives to phones offered by other wireless networks. Once a major wireless player in the United States, Alltel now serves a limited coverage area. Several years ago, Verizon bought the firm, but was forced to sell its interest in 105 Alltel markets. AT&T bought most of those markets, but a company called Atlantic Tele-Network bought 26 of them to form the current Alltel network. Wireless customers who live in an Alltel market have a powerful choice when shopping for a new mobile phone.Alltel offers phones from all major handset manufacturers except Apple. These include products from HTC, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Research in Motion. As with most wireless carriers, customers who make a two-year service commitment get subsidized handset prices. In fact, shoppers can often get a free phone with a contract. A special selection of no-contract phones gives customers a chance to pay more for a phone in exchange for more freedom. When wireless users see all the popular Alltel phones offered to Alltel customers, they will want to learn more about Alltel services.Alltel phones including smartphones let customers join the mobile revolution that has transformed the way people use the Internet. These phones integrate with Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. They also offer standard Internet access. Although Alltel has an unlimited smartphone plan, it only includes voice, text and pictures. Mobile data constitutes an extra monthly charge. Feature phone users with Alltel also have an unlimited plan available that offers unlimited voice and text. Alltel has several other service plans available that offer different services at a lower cost.A no-contract option offered by Alltel gives customers the chance to use wireless services without making a commitment. This can help people who already own Alltel phones or for people who want to avoid overextending themselves financially. Service for people without a contract generally costs more than standard Alltel service.
