Gaia Online is suitable for anyone aged 13 years or older, younger users aren't permitted (with or without parental permission, it's a blanket "no under-13s").

Of course there are some users who post inappropriate things, and so you should keep an eye on any kids. It may be better to let your kids play on safer and more restricted websites, like Neopets.

Gaia does grant a larger freedom of expression, such as with topics that can be discussed and swearing. In the case of the latter there is an optional word filter that can be switched on in your account settings to block swearing.

I would suggest avoiding three forums, the General Discussion, Lifestyle Discussion and the Chatterbox. Unfortunately both forums have a little bit of a problem with inappropriate content.

I would also suggest watching your children around the Extended Discussion and sub-forums due to the fact that many threads created are around controversial issues.

Discussion on topics is allowed, and those topics may not be appropriate for younger children. It's up to your own discretion though, it's recommended that you check the site out on your own first before allowing children on it.

I've added the links to the official parent information page and the safety tips page, which would be a good resource to read before deciding whether or not to allow your kids on Gaia.
