Actually, the proper method would be to use a female to female F-style coupler (both sides should look like the cable input on your TV). Then you would need to reterminate both ends of the broken cable with male F connectors and insert the female coupler in between the two ends.Since RG-6 has a solid semirigid center conducter and a braided shield, it's not as easy as just touching two wires together and walking away. Hi-Def signals and data signals require that the dielectric (the white part between the center and the shield) to be intact in order to work properly.

The tools to do what I described are somewhat expensive, and require you to know how to strip and prepare cable as well as crimp connectors properly. Avoid the compression style - even though they are superior, the tools to use them will cost you more than just calling a cable guy to come out and fix the problem.

Without using the proper tools you would expose the copper wire on both sides and twist them together.
