put your friends in different categories list...like work, friends, mafia wars...then when you log on, your online list is on the lower right hand corner...expand it..and right next to each list name...there is a green and white oval...works like an on-off slide switch...click on it to turn it off...you can't see who is online from that group...because you are blocked from them as well...but it leaves others available
