Nothing as you could not buy one, the Bell System monopoly (or if you were in one of the few communities with an independent telephone company, that company) owned every telephone just as they owned all the wires, telephone exchanges, long distances routes, etc. You leased your phone equipment and the monthly lease charge was included in your bill.

It was even illegal to connect anything that the telephone company did not own to their wires, until sometime in the 1980s.
