The main cause of corrosion is generally accepted as being WATER - either via wet fuel or more usually from the use of steam soot blowers and water cannons. In addition, the combustion gases SO2 and NO2 react with water to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid.

Erosion in boilers is also a problem and can be caused via ash particles in high gas stream velocity, again linked to wet conditions. When water cannons and steam soot blowers* are used for cleaning, the nature of their operation seeks out any weakness in the steel tubes (eg pitting) and makes them much worse. The case for using sonic soot blowers (ie. not using steam) has emerged because of this.

What are the main causes of the degradation of metals?

The main causes of metal degradation are corrosion, wear and tear, exposure to high temperatures, and chemical reactions with other substances. Corrosion, in particular, occurs when metals react with their environment (such as oxygen and moisture) and deteriorate over time. These factors can lead to structural weakness, diminished performance, and ultimately failure of the metal component.

What are the gases present in water that causes corrosion?

The main gases present in water that can cause corrosion are oxygen and carbon dioxide. These gases can react with metal surfaces, leading to the formation of corrosion products such as rust. Other gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, can also contribute to corrosion under certain conditions.

How many main engines were there on the Titanic?

Titanic had steam made by 29 boilers in six boiler rooms, which contained 159 coal burning furnaces fueling the boilers.

How do condensing boilers work?

Condensing boilers are designed to increase energy efficiency by using the wasted heat from flue gases to heat water up before it even reaches the main boiler. These boilers are very energy efficient and are mandatory or preferred in many countries.

Disadvantages of oil boilers?

The main disadvantage of oil boilers is cost right now. Home heating oil is significnatly more expensive than gas right now. There is no increase risk of fire.

What are the three main cases of corrosion?

There are 3 types of weathering Physical Weathering which is split into two parts a.Freeze-thaw-as water enters cracks and holes it freezes and expands dueing for the rock to form cracks and breaking of the rock bunion skin (Exfoliation)-As the rock heats up and expands by day, and cools and contracts by night, stress is often exerted on the outer layers. The stress causes the peeling off the outer layers of rock in thin sheets. 2. Biological weathering- the roots and animals burrow into rocks which causes them to break. 3. Chemical weathering- mineral dissolving in the water makes the water acidic which then eats away the rock and sometimes causes holes.

What do modal auxiliaries express?

Modal auxiliaries express necessity, possibility, permission, ability, or obligation in a sentence. Examples include "can" (ability), "must" (necessity), and "may" (permission). They help convey the speaker's attitude toward the action of the main verb, indicating how likely or required an event is to occur.
