As with any source , you should assess the integrity of the source. For example, who wrote the information that you are intending to use. Was it an expert on the subject at hand, or was it possibly someone who has a particular axe to grind relative to the topic?

When using test books written by scholars, the information is vetted for accuracy by editors before being printed in a scholarly text. So most of the work is already done for you. But you should also read what other scholars say on the topic at hand. Do they tend to agree with the first text?

Now, as for the internet, one must be particularly cautious when checking the accuracy of information garnered from the net. While the net is a valuable resource for information, anyone can post whatever they think, or believe to be true and pass it off as fact regardless of whether it is true or not. Therefore, it is exceedingly important for the researcher to do their due diligence about any information they receive off the net.
