In the United States, the states with the most area codes are:

  1. California (30 area codes, will be 31 as of 2012-11-20)
  2. Texas (24 area codes)
  3. Florida (17 area codes)
  4. New York (15 area codes)
  5. Illinois (13 area codes, with three more planned for 2013)

When area codes were first introduced in 1947, California had 3, Texas had 4, Florida had only 1, New York had 5, and Illinois had 4.

Why does Indianapolis IN have area code 317?

Area code 317 was one of the original 86 area codes assigned in 1947. Those original area codes were assigned by two criteria: (1) area codes that served an entire state had a 0 in the middle (e.g., 207 = Maine), while codes in states with more than one all had a 1 in the middle (e.g., California = 213, 415, and 916), and (2) the relative importance of a state or city roughly correlated with the total of the first and third digits - in other words, codes like 201 and 212 were at the top of the heap, while codes like 307 and 618 were for less busy places. Beyond that, why 317? No particular reason. It could just as easily have been 713 or 218. The codes were assigned somewhat randomly, mostly keeping confusingly similar codes separated. (For instance, you wouldn't want to have 505 right next to 515.) Back in 1947, area code 317 included not only the Indianapolis area, but all the way up to Gary and South Bend. It included present-day area codes 219, 260, 317, 574, and 765. Each time some part of the original 317 split off to a new code, Indianapolis kept the 317 number because it is both the most important commercial center in the state and also the state capital.
