The more pieces the better it can be distributed, but the more connections a receiver will need. Next a torrent file is built. It contains the signature (a small piece of information identifying the data) and the size of the file, amongst other information. When a person wants to obtain the file, they need the torrent file. This tells their application what data they are looking for. They can then contact sources which have that section of data who can allow them to download it.
