Any thing from hair to toys to roots or anything you jam down your toilet or drain pipe that wont decompose. I have snaked out a lot of sewer lines and I have to say that the number one reason for a clogged drain line is the pipe is not graded correctly or is back graded from settling. My 2nd most reason is tree roots or damaged pipe. If your home has plastic pipe like DWV ABS or PVC and it all grades perfectly down hill without damaged pipes the chances of having a clog are very very slim. Kitchen drain with disposals are the only drain lines I personally seen that have clogged with perfect grade with plastic drain pipes. Shower and tub drains mostly clog at the shower/tub strainer or trap and very rare clog after that if its plastic pipe and has slope.
Common causes of water backup in basements include heavy rainfall, clogged gutters or downspouts, poor drainage around the foundation, and sewer line blockages. Preventive measures include installing a sump pump, maintaining gutters and downspouts, grading the soil away from the foundation, and regularly inspecting and cleaning sewer lines.
You may not have a backflow preventer in the main line. This prevents anything coming back from the main line. It may be coming from your neighbors above you on the line.

The spring line of a sewer refers to the highest point of the sewer pipe's flow where the water level is typically at its peak during normal operation. This line is crucial for understanding drainage and flow dynamics, as it helps in determining the proper gradient and design of the sewer system. Properly managing the spring line can prevent issues such as blockages and backup, ensuring efficient wastewater transport.
