Acronyms are abbreviations for names or short phrases, made from the first letter (or letters) of the words they represent.

Notable examples are FBI, NASA, AARP, and NORAD. In all of these cases, the acronym has come to identify a unique organization.

In other cases, they abbreviate technical terms, such as CPU, RAM, and DVD. The acronym in many cases becomes the preferred term for the item or concept.

Some phrases change meaning or application over time, such as DWI to DUI, and AWOL to AOL (absent over leave) where a distinction is being made.

Acronyms (in some cases called initialisms) also form the majority of Textspeak, texting jargon that includes forms such as LOL, BRB, OMG, and BFF.
