Nuns in the Catholic tradition are women who have taken solemn vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and usually live in a cloistered convent. Strictly speaking, nuns are those who belong to religious orders which were established before the Reformation; they tended to be cloistered. Since the Council of Trent (mid 16th century) all foundations have been regarded as religious congregations. Sisters, often referred to as nuns, take these same vows and live in convents and do some kind of apostolic work depending on their community apostolate. This can include teaching, nursing, social work, prayer, retreats, and many other ministries. They do this to give of themselves completely to Christ and the Church
