An "area" defines the shape or extension of a particular item or location.

Within an area means the area inside of a shape, for example, the area of a room.

Out of area or outside of the area means going outside the area of a shape, such as going out of a room.

However, some word phrases are made as metaphors or similes to make readers think of a certain thing. The word area can be made into a word phrase, such as "area of study"... the area being within a particular type of study, such as medicine. Or, "area of expertise" means within a particular type of experience or schooling which makes someone an expert with "expertise". So, if I wrote, "The plumber acted outside of his area of expertise when he tried to diagnose his brother's stomach problem", you'd know the sentence means the plumber had no training as a doctor.

Always look at the whole phrase to determine the context.

"Out of area", depending on the context of how it is used, could mean things like:

  • calling a phone number outside your local calling area
  • receiving a long distance call from outside your local area, state, or country
  • acting outside of your area of study or expertise
  • placing an object in a place other than where it belongs
  • a criminal who runs from his crime and goes out of the general neighborhood
  • taking a vacation away from your residence
