According to Wikipedia, and several other sources, including my own memories of Latin classes, "Carolyn" derives from Carolus. It is basically the feminine form of "Charles". Meaning is that of "free man".

While a pretty name, and associated with the concept of "womanly" - probably from a popular show in which the pioneer mother was named "Caroline Ingalls" - it does not specifically mean that.
