It could either be a lenticular or elliptical galaxy, but they don't necessarily have to be ovals. My best guess is probably an elliptical galaxy because they're often very old and have run out of their interstellar matter. Lenticular galaxies are usually very old also, but since they used to be spiral galaxies, it's probably just a coincidence that the arms aren't there. So, yes, an elliptical galaxy is usually in an oval shape and is likely to have fewer stars than others.
