A hash tag (#) is used as Twitter symbol and linking tool for Twitter.
People use the hashtag symbol before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their Tweet to categorize those Tweets and help them show more easily in Twitter Search.
Example: I dislike migraines. #notfun
You can click the hashtag "#notfun" and it shows you all of the other tweets with the same phrase by people all of Twitter.
Hastags are often trends. Click on it and you'll see how many times it's used by all of the people on Twitter.
Example: #Beliebersrock or #Stopbullying - While a topic may not be trending, a lot of people may use the same phrase.
Hashtags can occur anywhere in the Tweet - at the beginning, middle or end.
Because the word bit is a "tag" and the symbol at the start "#" is called a "hash".
The hash tag symbol is used to highlight or stress the words in use.
