An acronym is a short (usually) group of letters which act as a mnemonic for a longer name. Generally, one aims for a pronounceable group of letters.

UNESCO, United Nations Educational and Scientific Council. RAF, Royal Air Force. NBS National Bureau of Standards. NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration. SWOT, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

But a common acceptance is that an acronym should be pronouncable, so NBS above may not qualify. For example, many school or academic names will have an accepted group of letters as a substitute for their name, but are really not acronyms.
