1st two positions = How to get an item.

3rd position = Who can use, replace, install the item.

4th position = Who can do complete repair on the item.

5th position = Who determines disposition if item is unserviceable.

Source Code (how to get an item) of PA = Stock items; use the applicable NSN to requisition/request items with

these source codes. They are authorized to the level indicated by the

code entered in the 3rd position of the SMR code.

Maintenance Code (1) of F = Field maintenance can remove, replace, and use the item.

Maintenance Code (2) of Z = Nonreparable. No repair is authorized.

Recoverability Code of Z = Nonreparable item. When unserviceable, condemn and dispose of the item at the level of maintenance shown in the third position of the SMR code.

Summary: if it is coded PAFZZ, field maintenance removes the item, throws it away, and replaces it with a new one.
