The fake pearl is very obvious. At the hole in the bead, there is usually an accumulation of pearlized coating. If there is not, there is chipping in the "pearl" color around the hole. This stuff flakes in the cheaply manufactured ones.
In a real pearl, the hole shows no coating. There are layers of nacre(the natural pearl coating) but usually one cannot see it. Scratching the hole will not produce any flaking whatsoever. The color might be uneven, or the pearl might be off round or oval shape. The simplest way to determine if the pearl is "real" or not is this. Brush your teeth, then rub the pearl gently across your front teeth. There will be a roughness that you can feel on the surface of your teeth. You cannot tell this by any other touch, but it apparant to your teeth. A fake pearl feels perfectly smooth. you can also throw it in a trash bin full of trash and wait till garbage day then if you see it all grimey and stuff then its real. by imagriefer

One of the easier ways to determine between a real and a fake is by weight.

There are many ways through which you can tell the difference between real and fake pearls. One of them is by rubbing them against your teeth; if the pearl feels smooth then it is most likely fake. Another way is to rub two pearls against each other, if they glide easily then they are fake, real pearls are not very smooth. One more method is to see if a pearl is perfect round shape it is fake, however, please note that some real pearls are perfectly round but are very rare.
