Back then you could actually place a 1-900 call from my school's pay phone without dropping any change in it. Obviously a mistake, but it shows how new the technology was at the time. As a kid I'd make up names and punch them in to see if it struck gold. All the kids seemed to do this. I don't know if those same lines are active now, or if it's the same business. In the beginning they played tape-recorded messages.

I believe it was on this line, in 1987, that some kid ran up a bill of $17,000. That got a lot of press and laws were passed "to prevent this from happening". As usual, action by Congress changed nothing, but the attention it caused made the industry react - primarily to protect their profits.
