I did a lot of research and found Canon PowerShot SD870 is to be the best camera for the money.

This camera is totally awesome! Takes very high quality pictures at a very fast speed. I highly recommend it for its small size, image stabilizer and long life rechargeable battery.

From the first day I received it. I just love it. Great shots up close and far away. Moreover, this is a very handy, tiny and light camera that you can carry in your pocket without feeling it.

The screen is huge and the colors are really good.

Menus and settings are very easy and clear. Some tips appear on the screen when you are using different modes, it is very helpful.

Well, you would want a DSLR, but the cheapest will not be very useful to you, due to the wide variation beween different camera functions. For instance, many very cheap SLR's don't have a live view - you cant see what you're taking a picture of, except for the view finder, but that wont help. Many good point and shoots (Sony, Canon, Nikon) will have conversion lenses that you can screw onto the camera. Make sure the conversion lens is by the same make as the camera.

For ultra cheap, I'd assume a high-quality point and shoot with conversion lenses would be cheapest, so you wouldn't have to shell out the 1000+ for good DSLR lenses. But if you do go with a cheap DSLR, just try for a Nikon or a Canon, because those are by far the most trusted cameras out there. For lenses, you can get a super cheap [around $90] mirror telephoto zoom lens, and many cameras come with 1 or 2 lenses to start with.
