The person whom has had the greatest effect on society could be one of many people. The person who invented the wheel could arguably be considered to have had tremendous effect. The people who first developed Metallurgy laid the tracks for modern metals and all the many innovations that make our lives safer and easier. The Romans developed plumbing systems and engineering principles that stand even today.
To answer the question with a single simple answer would require a knowledge of all human efforts and endeavors that is simply not possible. Even to single out one single person whom has had the greatest impact on a single field (mathematics, for example) is difficult to answer. Would it be Pythagoras, or Isaac newton, or Archimedes, or will it turn out to have been some other, obscure person whose contributions have been overlooked and is having tremendous effect that we don't yet know about.
Certainly religious leaders have effected society through the years, and it can be said with full confidence that the effect of Christianity on society has been all encompassing. Muhammed, Bhuddah, Confucias and many others have also had similar effects.
I would say that the greatest impact on society was made by whomever invented the wheel. It is a fundamental part of human interaction. Without it, none of the machinery that allows us to work together is possible. None of the contrivances we use to ship goods to and fro are possible, this means that society as a whole could not be so compacted. City size would necessarily be limited to however far goods could be carried or dragged. Importation of goods that are not grown in the vicinity of the city or made there would have to be brought on the back of beasts or men. Slavery is the necessary result of the hole that the lack of the wheel creates. Goods must be transported from place to place and while the backs of men may not be as brawny as those of beasts, men have hands and can be taught to obey many more commands.
