All smart phones should have data plans or many of their functions will not work, such as GPS navigation, Internet browsing, Email, and Applications. You do not need a Data plan to receive calls or text messages, but the majority of the functions on the phone such a weather apps and email will not work. Most phone service providers will not allow you to purchase a Smartphone without a Data Package due to its need for data communication.
