Any LCD screen has a transistor that drives each pixel built into the screen. If the transistor breaks down, the result can be that the matching pixel will always be on. The bottom line is that it doesn't make good economic sense to fix it.
My best guess would be the Sharp, since I've only worked on one in the last two years.
One cannot, it seems. The ADPV32 adapter failed twice on my Philips/Magnavox TV, and Philips sells them for about $130. An exhaustive search of the web revealed a few sellers in China and Russia, but at current exchange rates and high shipping, it would be even more expensive.

Some of the best LCD tv's for dorm rooms include the Sonny Bravio 22 inch, Vizio 23 inch,Samsung 22 inch. If you're able to find a Phillips LCD tv that is around that size, I'm sure that would work as well.
