The first record player, known as the phonograph, was invented by Thomas Edison in 1877. It was capable of recording and playing back sound using a cylinder. The flat disc format we associate with modern record players emerged later, with Emile Berliner's gramophone patenting the flat disc record in 1887.
In the year 1888 by a guy named Emile Berliner. RCA introduced the vinyl record in the 1930's. It was a financial failure after a few years. Vinyl records became more common during WWII when their durability for shipment to our troops overseas became important. Generally vinyl did not become the material of choice until the late 1940's.
