The first cell phone was sold to the public in 1984 by Motorola. The idea of a cell phone actually goes back to the 1930's when police radios were put in patrol cars. In 1947 the first attempt to make a cell was done by Bell labs, but it wasn't until 1974 when Dr. Martin Cooper at Motorola made the first working cell phone. The first cells were produced only for government use until 1984. The first cell phones were expensive to own and calls were charged by the minute. Very few cell towers existed so calls were dropped and there were "dead" spots. The phone was in a bag with the entire bottom holding the battery. They were heavy and bulky to own or carry. I had one I kept in my car for emergency calls.
