Makaton was developed in the early 1970s in the UK for communication with residents of a large hospital who were both deaf and intellectually disabled. The name is a blend of the names of the three people who devised it: Margaret Walker, Kathy Johnston and Tony Cornforth.

Makaton started in the 1970's my Matgret Walker and 2 of her companions Kathy Johnston and Tony Cornforth to help deaf and people who can't talk to communicate with people who can hear and talk. the spelling of makaton is because the 2 first letters of MArgret KAty and TOny become the word MAKATON.
As a communication lecturer, I teach young adults with learning disabilities how to use Makaton as a communication aid. Within my work place their have been some negative responces, one being "Makaton makes learners lazy with their speech." I would like to hear other views in answer to the above question.
Braille, Sign language and Makaton.
Makaton is an approach to communication that uses symbols, signs, and speech. The letters in "Makaton" do not stand for individual words; instead, the name is derived from the combination of two locations in the UK where the system was developed: the "Ma" from Manchester and the "Kat" from Kent. It is designed to support individuals with communication difficulties.
You can purchase Makaton, or basic sign language, posters online at the Amazon website. You can also find them from personal sellers on websites such as eBay and Craigslist.
The Makaton Charity was set up to support families and care takers of the deaf. They teach family members how to sign and offer classes for infants and toddlers as well.
