Where did WikiLeaks begin?

WikiLeaks website was founded in 2007 by journalists, Chinese dissidents and other activists. It publishes leaked government documents from anonymous sources. Its editor-in-chief, director and spokesperson is Julian Assange, an Australian journalist and activist.

It was started by computer whizzes from about a dozen nations, including Australia, the US, and parts of Asia. It was originally launched with the same format as other Wiki's - people could go onto articles and edit them as they pleased - but it moved away from that and now runs itself more like an online magazine.

It was founded in 2006 - although the names of it's creators have not been revealed. Many think Julian Assange was the founder, though he described himself as a member of the WikiLeaks advisory board, not as it's founder.

The WikiLeaks mission statement was - and still is:

"...exposing oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to people of all regions who wish to reveal unethical behaviour in their governments and corporations."
