"tele" is from the Greek word for "distant", and has nothing to do with radio waves.

Greek and Latin. "Tele" means "from a distance" in Greek, whilst "vision" (visus) means "to see" in Latin. Therefore "television" means "to see at a distance". Of course, it is a modern word. Neither the Ancient Greeks nor the Romans had television! Although the word was invented before the television set itself - the word and the concept is from the 19th Century, but it wasn't possible to invent television until the 1920s.
