The first actual cell phone was made in 1973 by Martin Cooper who used the idea of the car phone and applied the technology to make a portable cell phone. In 1984 the public was able to buy the first cell phones.

Some of the first smartphones came out in 2001. Palm was the manufacture. It had limited capabilities and used mainly as a phone and personal data assistance.

It was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola it was called the DynaTac 800 and it weighed 30 ounces ( today they are 3 ounces) . Dr. Cooper describes it as "like a brick." The cost for the phone was 3,500.00. This was in 1983.
