William Lloyd Garrison, one of the co-founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society, succeeded in imposing his radical agenda on the organization, particularly his emphasis on immediate emancipation and nonviolence. His uncompromising views and rejection of political engagement led to significant tensions within the society. This ultimately resulted in the splintering of the movement and the departure of other key figures, such as Frederick Douglass and Arthur Tappan, who sought a more pragmatic approach to abolition.
