In the electrical trade devices that are used to support a cable or conduit entry into an electrical device are called connectors. These can be called strain relief, sealtite, EMT, or BX but they are all called connectors

When the word gland is used it usually refers to the wiring of explosion proof devices. When making a wire end, the conductors are fed through an empty gland that is twisted on to the end of the explosion proof cable. Into this empty gland is poured a epoxy type compound that hardens itself around the conductors. The hub of the fitting slides over the gland and is screwed into the threaded hole of the device that connects to the cable. By sealing the cable in this method, explosive gasses or dust that might seep into the electrical device is prevented.Pyrotenax, a mineral insulated cable, is one type of cable that uses this method of sealing its cable ends. These type of wire ends are also used with Tech cable that are used in explosion proof areas.

Why cable glands not used for HT cables?

Cable glands are typically not used for high-tension (HT) cables because HT cables require specialized termination methods to manage the high voltages and prevent electrical arcing. HT cables often use insulated connectors and terminations that provide better sealing and insulation properties than standard cable glands. Additionally, the mechanical stresses and environmental factors associated with HT applications necessitate robust solutions that adhere to specific safety standards, which standard cable glands may not meet.

What is the purpose of a gland in electrical installation?

Glands in the electrical trade are used to make a seal between two electrical components. For an example; a cable coming into a weather proof junction box requires a sealing gland connector to keep the integrity of the junction box's weather proof rating where the cable enters into the box. Gland also used to ensure that the metallic armor is in contact with the cabinet on which it gets fitted. But these days where plastic boxes and plastic glands are being common this practice is rarely applied nowadays.(In India) Gland ensures that there is no unnecessary pressure, stress on the cable conductor, but firmly holding it on to while providing a reliable entry of the cable into the box. In North America any cable holding device that is not water proof is called a cable connector.
