You must reset a modem each time you take away or add a piece of equipment to it, because it needs to pick up an IP address with whatever you are hooking it up to. That IP address helps those pieces of equipment communicate with one another. If you were to add a router or another PC to a modem that had not been reset and still had the old settings from a different machine, it wouldn't allow you to connect. Those devices have to be in sync with one another.
restart your modem then hook it up
go to autozone and have them hook it up to there computer and if you've already fixed the problem they can reset it.
Use a router or switch to share one internet connection. You can purchase a wired modem very cheap and then hook an ethernet cable from it to the PS3.
It is not recommended but you can share your internet through your computer and the xbox can use it as a gateway to the modem.
You can reset the computer by an obd II scanner or if you dont have the money to buy one just unhook the terminals on the battery for 5 minutes and your computer will be reset hook it back up and your ready to go!

A modem, which you normally get from the DSL provider, is really the only thing you need (apart from a computer). But it is recommended to get a home router/firewall as well, it gives basic protection against computer attacks from the internet and lets you hook up a second computer to the same DSL connection.See related Wikipedia link.
