Most room heaters, and heaters in general, will smell the first couple times you use them. If they haven't been used in a while, you may get that smell again. However, the smell should go away with use.
If it's a gas heater it could be a gas leak. It is probably best to get it checked out. the first few times i use the heat-it smells-the dust in the duct system is pulling into furnace , and burning...goes away. can you describe the smell .. is it gas, forced hot air( vents / ducts ) or hot water and radiators- not likely- this info. are nedded to answer accurately...
