In the back of the toilet where the drain pipe goes down there is what is called a trap. It is an "S" shape in the pipe that traps the water in the bowl. When there is enough water in the bowl to push out the water and air in the trap, it goes out taking the water in the bowl with it. If you mean the automatic flushers that you find in public restrooms, then they have an electronic eye that senses when there is someone there and when that person moves it flushes.

Why is Archie Bunker's toilet so loud?

To make people ask questions about it! Actually a toilet flushing on TV is called comic effect. We generally don't expect to hear a flushing toilet on TV, but then we never expected to hear 90% of the remarks that came out of Archie's mouth either! Some might even call it all "potty humor" so the flushing and the yapping were one and the same.

How do people in China typically use toilets, especially in public settings, and are there any cultural norms or practices to be aware of when using toilets in China?

In China, people typically use squat toilets in public settings. To use a squat toilet, one squats over the toilet hole instead of sitting on a seat. It is important to note that toilet paper may not always be provided, so it is common for people to carry their own. Additionally, it is customary to throw used toilet paper in the trash bin instead of flushing it down the toilet. It is also polite to wear slippers or special toilet shoes when using public toilets in China.

Why is the term john used for toilet?

"The John" for Sir John HarringtonThe flushing toilet was invented in 1596, not by Thomas Crapper as most people think, but by Sir John Harington. Harington, a British nobleman and godson of Queen Elizabeth I, invented a valve that when pulled would release water from a water closet. Sir John recommended flushing the toilet once or twice a day, although with our modern technology, we know that is probably not sufficient. (Rumor has it that, in Robin Hood's day, King Richard the Lionheart - angry with how his brother, Prince John, ruled the country while the King was gone, named fair toilette, 'the john' - AKA as 'the Jon' to you folks.) Answer Inventor of first flush toilet.Sir John Harrington invented the first flush toilet in the late 1500's. I have even heard that he installed it for Queen Elizabeth 1st, and she affectionately referred to it as her "John", but have no idea if that is true. I believe he actually installed the first toilet in his own mansion.

Can someone recommend a good DIY book for homeowners doing their own toilet repair?

I have the Black & Decker "Complete Guide to Home Plumbing" and find it very useful for toilets and sinks, etc. It's a paperback that sells for around $20 online. It's only about five years old so it has fairly current information in it.
