Think it was the obvious evolution of the iPod. The first time I held and used an ipod-thought what a great idea it would be if this could be your phone too and you'd have only one item to carry around. So it was probably just a natural improvement or evolution of the ipod. Saying why not instead of a we could never do that mentality.
