A new bill, house bill 2377, became effective on January 1st this year in Oregon. It prohibits the use of communication devices while operating a motor vehicle. This new law is not the first of it’s kind in the US, nor will it be the last. Oregon is just one in a string of states that is taking the initiative to help keep drivers safe and free from distraction.
Previously, it was acceptable for drivers over the age of 18 to use their cell phones while driving, but this new law prohibits drivers from using cell phones unless they have a hands free wireless device. Drivers under 18, are still unable to use any sort of communication device even with a hands free device.
The only time it is acceptable for individuals to use a two way communication device of any kind is in the case of an emergency when no other individual in the vehicle is able to call for help. People working in a public safety position are also able to use a communication device while operating a motorized vehicle. Persons under the age of 18 can use a cell phone with a hands free device if they are working in a farming or agriculture position. Operating a cell phone while driving a motorized vehicle aside from in the instances mentioned above will receive a class D traffic violation.
For the most part, Oregonians are over joyed that this bill has finally been put into place. It’s been stated that is a law that is ’long overdue’, and the people of the state are excited to see safer highways and more conscientious drivers. The fine for violating this new law is noted to be fairly steep, and one individual claimed to be fined for $140 for his class D traffic violation.
Citizens are now wondering whether hands free communication will be outlawed in the future as well. Even hands free communication distracts a driver from the road ahead of them. The outcome of this new law will surely decide what actions legislators will take towards more strict cell phone laws.
