There are many talking books for you to listen to on Cd's so therefore there is no reason you cannot read a book without actually reading.
I don't think you can do a book report without reading the book. Unless you go on line to research the book, you might be able to wright a book report on it. But for the most part, no you cannot write the report if you don't read the book first. I usually do the book report while I read the book.
AR tests are designed to make sure that the student has read the book recently. The questions are often on small details. It is advisable to read the book and pass because your grade may depend on it.
The past tense of "reading" can be achieved by:- I was reading this book yesterday. or I read this book yesterday. Both are correct.
You don't, simple. Either read the book or find someone else to lead the discussion.

Read the book at home. She can't yell at you there. If you have to record what you read, make sure you read another book, too. Then, you can honestly say you were reading the other book, and she can't yell at you for reading the book you want to read. (Just make sure you don't tell her about the book you're not supposed to be reading. What she doesn't know can't hurt her.)
