1. Graphite which is mixed with clay and fired to make the pencil lead is in great demand for lithium battery technologies including for automotive purposes (electric cars) and also in steel production.

2. The wood used for the pencil case may become unavailable or undesirably expensive to gather.

3. New technology will eventually supplant the humble pencil and paper so less will be needed and consequently produced.

Any or all of these things could make pencils scarce as demand falls. Pencils will probably always be available, especially for art work but they may become niche items and consequently very expensive, a little like nice fountain pens have become.
