Temple Grandin built a device resembling a squeeze chute using wood and a swing gate while she was in college. The device helped to calm down her anxiety by applying pressure to her body. This experience led her to develop more advanced cattle handling equipment later in her career.
It is called a Squeeze Chute. One cow or bull or steer or heifer enters the squeeze from a narrow alleyway or chute. Once in the squeeze the operator opens the head-gate to allow the head to slip through. Before the shoulders slip through the gate is pushed shut by the animal's shoulders and by the operator outside. If the animal is fighting the head gate the side panels of the squeeze squeeze together to calm the animal and further restrain it.
You herd her into a progressively smaller enclosure, shutting the gates behind you so she doesn't escape. If you have an alley way that she cannot turn around in, move her down that into the squeeze chute. Once she's in the squeeze chute, roll the gate shut behind her and get her head in the head catch. If you use calm handling practices, this all only takes a few minutes to do.
The squeeze chute passage reveals that Grandin has a deep understanding and empathy for animals, recognizing their needs and stress responses. Her design of the chute reflects a commitment to humane treatment, as she strives to minimize fear and discomfort during handling. This relationship is rooted in her belief that better treatment of animals leads to improved welfare and more efficient management in agricultural settings. Overall, it underscores her dedication to bridging the gap between human practices and animal well-being.
A head gate (or head catch), or a squeeze chute. If you're referring to something bigger, then it would be a corral or pen.
Free from what? A trap? A farm? A barbed wire fence? A head gate as part of a squeeze chute? Please be more specific when asking these types of questions.
