What is the difference between academic and non academic writing?

One involves school (academic) and the other doesn't (non- academic). Both can be creative writing; both can use sources. The difference is whether you've written to earn a grade-- or if it is for your use. Personal use includes the sale or submission for publication. Other than Journal Articles, few academic writing pieces are ever published.

Academic writing is not necessarily a matter of style or quality (although academic culture does have some rigid expectations of style). Academic writing is writing whose purpose is to further the discourse within the/an academic system. It is meant to communicate ideas amongst members of the academic community: scholars, professors, fellows and students. It is meant to become part of the library and ongoing discussion upon which progress in a particular academic subject (French Literature, Skin Grafting Procedures, Political Science...) is pursued. Non-academic writing is aimed at any audience outside the boundaries of the University-Post Uni systems.
