In Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, punishment leads to suffering, which is seen as necessary in order to truly be forgiven and purged free of one's sins. This is displayed when an innocent Nikolay, one of the painters of Lizaveta's and Alyona Ivanovna's house, confesses to having murdered the two aforementioned women. In the novel, Nikolay belongs to a religious sect which stresses the importance of suffering for others' sins, which only further expresses the objective of punishment to the reader. Towards the end of the book, Raskolnikov confesses to the crimes, accepts Sonia's cross, and begins eight years of imprisonment in Siberia as punishment. In accepting his punishment, he begins the journey of renewal: "But that is the beginning of the new story, the story of the gradual renewal of a man, of his gradual regeneration, of his slow progress from one world to another, of how he learned to know a hitherto undreamed of reality."

Of course, the actual process of either punishment or negative reinforcement could turn out to be exactly the same. Only the motive is different.
