Christopher Latham Sholes developed his typewriter machine to address the inefficiency of handwritten documents and to improve the speed and accuracy of writing. The machine was also intended to create a standardized method for producing legible text.
1873 was the first commercially-available model (about 50 made), after which the design was bought by Remington. Sholes went on to develop the QWERTY keyboard, which is probably why his name is so closely associated with the history of typewriters.
