A few reasons. One, hardback books carry historic prestige, as they were the only way you could get a book until the 1930s, when inexpensive (and often pocket-sized) paperback books finally hit the market. The paperback format became incredibly popular, but they were inevitably perceived as somehow inferior, with lesser-anticipated titles even debuting as paperback exclusives and some reviewers only considering hardback releases.

That leads us to the second reason: Because of the built-in prestige, booksellers can sell new releases in hardback (which actually cost more to make) at a higher price and make a killing, making back any money they spent in the lead-up to publishing. Then, some time later, they can re-market the cheaper-to-make paperback version and make another killing.

Oh, another key reason: Hardbacks are big and easier to display prominently on bookstore shelves.

Hardcover books cost more to produce due to the materials used and the production process. Hardcover books are typically more durable and have a longer lifespan compared to softcover books, which justifies the higher price point. Additionally, hardcover books are often seen as more premium or collectible, contributing to their higher cost.

Hard cover books tend to cost more due to the extra materials needed to make them, and the fact that they are more sturdy. Hard cover books tend to be more durable, and stand up better to the test of time than soft cover books.

The hardback is a mark of quality and a demonstration of intent on behalf of the publisher: it shows booksellers and reviewers that this is a book worth paying attention to. In fact some literary editors will still only review fiction (on first publication) if it's published in hardback.

A certain book cost 12 more in hardcover than in softcover If the softcover price is two thirds of the hardocver price how much does the book cost in hardcover?

Let's represent the cost of the softcover book as x. Since the hardcover book costs 12 more than the softcover, the hardcover book costs x + 12. We know that the softcover price is two thirds of the hardcover price, which means x = (2/3)(x + 12). Solving for x, we find that x = 8, so the softcover book costs $8, and the hardcover book costs x + 12 = 8 + 12 = $20.

What are the benefits of hardcover books over paperback books?

"Soft cover" and "paperback" are two phrases for the same thing. They are contrasted with "hard-cover" books. As stated above, typically paperback or soft cover books are sold in two different styles "mass market" and "trade." These are publishing terms, and a lot of the difference has to do with the way they are distributed to bookstores and the return policies (from the bookseller back to the publisher.) Trade paperbacks are typically more expensive and larger. Mass market paperbacks are the smaller size you will also see in drug stores etc., and are sometimes called pocket books.

What is the difference between hardcover and library binding?

Library binding is a way to increase the life of books and periodicals used in libraries. This is done by sewing the pages in place and by reinforcing the spine for each volume Hardcover may have flexible sewn spines which allow the book to lie flat on a surface when opened, although most modern commercial hardcover books have glued spines. Library binding is also used to re-bind paperbacks or hardcover books making them more durable.
