If you are writing a science textbook ( this is not done by one person but several) you would need to know this, but if you were writing a English textbook you wouldn't need to know it. It takes dozens of people, many years, and several edits to turn out a textbook. Look in one of your textbooks and you will see a list of all the people who wrote it. The average textbook takes 5 years from the start until it is in the hands of students.
