Medical researchers and physicians still debate how many years in the lifespan are lost because of smoking and drinking. One camp claims that smoking reduces the lifespan at least 20 years. However, another camp points to people who smoked every day but lived until age 90 to 100+ years.

Although news focuses more on the risks of smoking, drinking has severe negative effects, especially on the liver which clears toxins from the body and on the pancreas which produces and regulates insulin.

Clearly, it is almost equally damaging to body systems-- the lungs and liver are essential to living--whether one drinks or smokes. However, just how damaging and whether either vice decreases lifespan for every person is still open to debate. Most recent reports are that genes/hereditary, weight, exercise, and general health also impact the degree of damage done by a person's drinking or smoking.

All physicians agree that no one should smoke. Some physicians believe it is okay to drink in moderation.
