Warnings on some dishware is required because materials used to make or finish the pieces may contain chemicals known to be or are suspected to be carcinogenic or otherwise toxic. Pewter is an example since many pieces contained lead. Some glazes contain materials that are unsafe because they are known carcinogens. A number of attractive items that could be used around food should not be because in making them, the manufacturer made a poor choice based on cost considerations or even on misinformation. Regardless, regulations require these problem items to carry a label.
