Los Angeles is by the Los Angeles River but only a short drive to the Mojave Desert.
Many types of plants and animals can live in a desert. People can also build cities in a desert, as long as they have some way to supply water to the city.
High desert river valley
Technically it is in a high-desert climate but the actual city is nestled on the river and is absolutely FULL of trees and other plants. So outside of city limits it is empty and dry but in the city its a lush oasis.
